Final City newsletter.

Hello everyone

A final thank you to everyone who has taken the time out of their busy days to read my campaign newsletter for the past 5 months, and my Council updates for the past 3 years before that.

It’s been an honour to serve the people of Perth for the past 3 years as an Elected Member. One of the great things about the role has been the many great people I have met along the way, and the new friends I have made across the broad range of communities that make up our City.

This is my final City newsletter. It’s back to the drawing board for me - literally! I have a house renovation project to finish for some clients who have been very patient with me in recent months! And of course, preparations for Perth Design Week 2024 …

My 3 years as an Elected Member

As I move back into my portfolio of architecture roles, I leave my role at City of Perth Council proud of my record of achievements over the past 3 years; and the legacy of good policies I leave behind.

As a City Councillor, I had a strong record of delivery, progressing things that matter across our City’s communities.

In my time on Council I successfully put forward 16 policies via Notice of Motion aimed at making our city streets, laneways and neighbourhoods more people focused and business friendly - improving the street level experience for city workers, residents, visitors, artists and the retail and hospitality sectors. My policies include:

  • Main Street Refresh” aimed at refreshing and revitalising key streets in our City neighbourhoods over a period of time (Adelaide Terrace, James Street, Hay Street, Hampden Road)
In this year’s budget, $1,250,000 has been allocated for delivery of my Main Street Refresh policy, and a total of $5.7 million has been allocated across the next 7 years.

  • A program for “Revitalising Perth’s Laneways”. Left unlit, and underutilised, they provide a space for crime and antisocial behaviour.
In this year’s budget $500,000 has been allocated towards my Revitalising Perth’s Laneways policy, and over $2 million has been allocated over the next four years.

  • My three “Light It Up” policies centered around permanent lighting in the City. Lighting of a pedestrian bridge in East Perth was completed in 2021 and laneway lighting in subsequent years.

In this year’s budget $300,000 has been allocated for further Light it Up Lighting enhancement and a total of over $1 million has been allocated until 2026/27.

  • My “Sustainable City” policy prompted incentives for this financial year to help jump start the sustainability movement at the City of Perth. The City’s commitment for this financial year was $300,000.
The City of Perth has just started its sustainability journey, with its first Sustainability Strategy adopted only last year. And there’s a long way to go. It’s good that the City now has a long list of possible initiatives from Cundall that they can consider implementing over time.

I’ll be excited to watch from the sidelines as these projects come to life.

Other projects that the City has already implemented that started with policies I put forward as Notices of Motion include:

  • LGBTQIA+ Plan

  • Tech Action Plan

  • Architecture and Design Advisory Group

  • Extension of free parking on Hay Street in West Perth

  • Lighting in Totterdell Park

  • Perth Trails App

  • Council House Gallery

  • Extension of Lunar New Year celebrations into the City

To make a great City takes big ideas and small. Hopefully these policies contribute to making our City a better place.

Stay in touch

As I said, this is my last City newsletter. But if you would like to follow my Perth Design Week project, please send me an email and I can sign you up for my newsletter for that.

Thanks again for your support over the past 5 months of my campaign, and over the past 3 years as an Elected Member. It’s been an honour.

Best wishes always

Sandy
