Sandy Anghie delivering for all City neighbourhoods

Week 7 Campaign update.

Since announcing my campaign for Perth Lord Mayor seven weeks ago, I have been visiting residents and businesses across our City neighbourhoods every day to get their direct feedback on what we can do better. Great cities of the world are always striving to be better.

Some people say there are no guarantees in life, but if elected as Perth's next Lord Mayor I guarantee I will serve a full term, as a full time Lord Mayor. It's what Perth deserves.

Here’s my update for this week.

2023 City of Perth Budget

This week sees the delivery of the 2023/24 City of Perth Budget.

I’m proud to see that a number of my initiatives have been included in the Budget for this financial year and beyond.

As a City Councillor, I have a strong record of delivery, progressing things that matter across our City’s communities.

I have successfully put forward a number of initiatives aimed at making our city streets, laneways and neighbourhoods more people focused and business friendly - improving the street level experience for city workers, residents, visitors, artists and the retail and hospitality sectors.

Main Street Refresh

Many of the key streets in our diverse City neighbourhoods haven’t been refreshed for decades. So in May 2021, I introduced a policy via Notice of Motion (NOM) called “Main Street Refresh” aimed at refreshing and revitalising key streets in our City neighbourhoods over a period of time. Some examples include:

  • Adelaide Terrace, East Perth

  • James Street, Northbridge

  • Hay Street, West Perth

  • Hampden Road, Nedlands

This year’s budget:

In this year’s budget, $1,250,000 has been allocated for delivery of the Main Street Refresh program, and a total of $5.7 million has been allocated across the next 7 years.

This is a really exciting program and I can’t wait to see the city come to life as our main streets are enhanced. Prioritising a focus on our City’s neighbourhoods and fostering their unique identities through local upgrades such as the Main Street Refresh, is critical to enhancing a sense of community and vibrancy in our City.

The City of Perth administration engaged architects to assist in developing options for this program. William Street in the CBD was identified as a priority and the refresh is set to commence this year, including paving, tree planting, greening and public art.

Laneway Revitalisation

Time and time again, I have heard property and business owners talk about the need to upgrade City laneways. Left unlit, and underutilised, they provide a space for crime and antisocial behaviour.

So since elected in 2020, I have put forward two policies centred around laneway revitalisation, both of which were supported by a majority of council. The first policy, focused on lighting, is complete. My second laneway policy asked the CEO to develop a program for “Revitalising Perth’s Laneways” - and this is now underway.

This year’s budget:

$500,000 has been allocated in the 2023/24 budget towards Revitalising Perth’s Laneways, and over $2 million has been allocated over the next four years.

Wolf Lane was identified by the City of Perth administration as a priority with the refresh set to commence this year, including public art and lighting installation.

I’m looking forward to seeing our local laneways come to life with this investment – to help create a safer and more walkable city.

Light It Up

Since elected I have put forward three “Light It Up” policies centred around permanent lighting in the City. Light It Up Parts 1 and 2 are now complete, and Light It Up Part 3 is now underway.

My Light It Up Part 3 requested the CEO to investigate opportunities for permanent light installations in the City. I also requested that the private sector be engaged with grants and sponsorships and that the installations be delivered sustainably.

This year’s budget:

$300,000 has been allocated in the 2023/24 budget for Light it Up Lighting enhancement and a total of over $1 million has been allocated until 2026/27.

I’m excited to see projects like this come to life and engage our creative sector to make our city safe, vibrant and inclusive.

Other projects

Other projects included in the budget that started with policies I put forward include funding of:

  • LGBTQIA+ Plan

  • Tech Action Plan

  • Extension of free parking on Hay Street in West Perth
