Sandy Anghie for Enhanced Safety

Week 9 Campaign update.

Enhanced Safety

Safety is fundamental to the liveability of a city. The actual and perceived safety of residents, businesses and visitors should always be a priority.

As your Lord Mayor, safety will be a priority - across all City neighborhoods.

  1. Less parking inspectors, more community “Safe City Patrols” patrols. That’s what everyone wants

  2. Work collaboratively with WA Police to improve safety for residents and business

  3. Design for “Safe Spaces”, including laneway revitalisation

  4. Enhanced street cleaning in the CBD and Northbridge

  5. Bring more people to the City 24/7 for passive surveillance

A recent examination of the WA Police crime data revealed which suburbs are Perth’s safest and which had the highest crime rates. According to this review, the Perth policing district had the highest crime rate in WA in 2022 / 23. We can do better.

Safe City Patrols. Increased “Safe City Patrols”, redeploying parking officers, was an initiative introduced by the City of Perth Commissioners back in 2020. This saw patrols seven days a week from 7am to 9pm across all areas of the City. This is a good initiative, working together with the WA Police, to act as a deterrent to criminal and antisocial behaviour and to help people feel safe.

Security Cameras. There’s also an opportunity to increase safety in West Perth, Nedlands and Crawley through the installation of security cameras. Below is a series of snapshots of current locations of the City’s security cameras - Nedlands/Crawley, West Perth, CBD/Northbridge, East Perth/Claisebrook. As you can see, there are significant gaps in our western neighbourhoods.

You can explore the map yourself via the link here. The presence of these cameras is not only used to catch offenders, but also acts as a deterrent and increases public perceptions of safety.

Safe Spaces. Peoples’ behaviour, in terms of the possibility of offending, as well as an individual’s perception about their safety, can be influenced by the design of the environment. That’s why design for “Safe Spaces” is important. Commonly known as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), this is recognised globally. Good maintenance, like my Laneway Revitalisation and Main Street Refresh programs, as well as cleaner streets, are all part of this.

24-hr City. Importantly, busy cities are safe cities. People often comment that Northbridge feels safest during the Fringe Festival. The presence of people means casual surveillance, making urban precincts inherently safer.

A strong night-time economy is critical, with innovation that attracts creative industries and drives a diverse local activation program, providing non-alcohol related options for people of all ages. We want people moving around our City at all hours - residents, works, students, and visitors - keeping our City alive, and safe.

A 24-hour city is a vibrant and safe city.

It’s been a busy 9 weeks since launching my campaign for Perth Lord Mayor at the October 2023 election. I have been visiting residents and businesses across our City neighbourhoods every day to get their direct feedback on what we can do better. Great cities of the world are always striving to be better.

My Plan for Perth

My campaign platform is inclusive of our City’s communities and addresses the things that matter to residents and businesses. Here’s a summary:

  1. Standing up for all City neighbourhoods

  2. Make Perth a 24 Hour City, building on the incoming ECU City Campus

  3. Enhanced safety measures

  4. Improve transparency and accountability

  5. Keep rates low and make residential parking permits free

  6. Work with all levels of Government to tackle homelessness

  7. Future proof our City with my Youth and Tech Action Plans

  8. Implement my Arts Mean Business Plan

  9. Continued focus on sustainability and urban greening

  10. Refresh key streets and laneways in every City neighbourhood

Calling all City of Perth Residents and Businesses!

While the election is a few months away, now is the time to enrol to vote. To have your say, you must be enrolled to vote by Friday 25th August 2023.

While you may have enrolled previously, a number of people have found that they have slipped off the roll, as it is regularly revised by the City of Perth.

So it’s important to check that you are still on there and if not, restore your right to vote. You can check by sending an email to election@cityofperth.wa.gov.au

If you like my plans for Perth, and want to vote, you need to enrol now.

Enrol to vote

To enrol to vote, follow these steps:

  1. Click the “enrol to vote” button below to go to my website. Scroll down on the home page of my website and click the “enrol to vote” button there.

  2. This will take you to a City of Perth website. Click “How do I enrol”.

  3. Fill out the relevant forms depending on your status as a: resident; property owner; or leaseholder.

  4. Then send these forms back to the City of Perth.

The boundaries of the City take in the CBD, Northbridge, East Perth, Claisebrook Cove, West Perth, Crawley and part of Nedlands.

I encourage you to make sure you can have your say in who represents our capital city by enrolling to vote before the 25th of August.

A vote for Sandy Anghie as Lord Mayor is a vote for a full time, full term Lord Mayor. If you have a vision for your city, you need to stay the course so you can implement it.

It’s what voters expect, and with me – it’s what they will get.

In addition to commitments I have announced to date, I will be announcing a range of further commitments over the coming months. And I will be listening to you - our City’s residents, businesses and community groups. I look forward to hearing your ideas and feedback.
